This wonderful handmade Kiawe Hook was hand turned by my husband on his lathe from reclaimed wood. The hook itself is bronze and the eye at the top is brass. These Kiawe hooks are a slimmer design than our usual hooks if you're looking for a different fit in your hand.
Kiawe wood is a local favorite for fueling fires for hibachis, smoking meat or the imu, just the smell of kiawe smoke is known by many locals to create an immediate hunger for some ono food.
While it now grows in abundance on the leeward sides of all major Hawaiian Islands, its arrival can be traced back to a single seedling that was planted in 1828 in the corner of a churchyard in Honolulu.
It is a species of the mesquite tree; its scientific name is Prosopis pallida. It is a thorny legume, native to Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Considered an invasive species in other places it grows, Kiawe is threatened in its native habitat.
Trees grow rather quickly and can live for over a millennium.
This hook came from a piece of wood from a visit to our good friend who lives in upcountry Maui. He's an amazing old native hawaiian......in his late 70's and has tons of wonderful stories of the old days on the islands. I could sit at his knee and listen for hours. His woodworking skills and his beautiful creations take my breath away! Each year we make sure we take the time to go and visit and gather up some beautiful wood to bring home with us. My sweet husband spends hours in his woodshop turning and carving with these precious "scraps". The deep rich red of this wonderful spinning tool is stunning. And I love how the shape of his hooks fit so nicely in my hand and conveniently hang on my wheel and are ready whenever needed.
I've added a hanger of various gemstones and beads. You can choose between the Earth Bead Collection which includes gorgeous earth tone gemstones and beads including several Jasper stones, Jade, Wood and Tibetan Agate. Or you can choose the Ocean Bead Collection which includes gemstones and beads in colors of the sea including Russian Amazonite, Lapis, Turquoise, Lavenderite, African Opal, Jade, Amethyst, Chrysocolla and Apatite. Hang your Orifice Hook on your wheel and keep it handy and adorn your wheel at the same time.
Finished size for the hook itself is 7 inches long x 1 1/2 inches wide. The beaded hanger can be removed if needed with the clasp at the top and adds an additional 7 inches to the overall length. The photos show the exact wood hook you'll receive but here will be some variance in the beads as is the nature of the stones but all are beautiful pieces of earth/sea colors.
I do my best to accurately photograph my yarn but monitors may differ. All my photos are taken outside in natural light. Please contact me with any questions before you purchase the hook.
