This Madrone Andean Plyer is handmade by my husband who enjoys spending a great deal of time creating each spinning tool for your home. He spends many hours gathering the wood from windfalls, local forest management  and often they're gifts from local folks who are happy that they're wood is being used and enjoyed) and then in his woodshop lovingly cutting, sanding and finishing with these woods. We have great respect for these trees and are grateful to give them a second life with these practical spinning tools.
 
Pacific madrone is distributed on the Pacific Coast, from southwestern British Columbia south through Washington to western Oregon, and in the Coastal Ranges to south California. The heartwood is described as light pink to pale reddish-brown, sometimes with deep red spots. It often has golden shades too. It has an irregular pattern of growth rings, which gives the wood a very decorative effect. We're constantly amazed at the colors and designs in this wood!

My husband spends hours in his woodshop turning, cutting, sanding and finishing with these woods. I love how the shape of this plyer fits so nicely in my hand and makes plying the "extras" such a pleasant and easy task.

Andean Plying is often done on the hand but this gorgeous tool makes it much more pleasant and with the stand it frees up both hands to use for the plying. With this tool the wool singles are wound onto the handle of the plyer, then pulling out the peg releases the strands which can then be used to ply with. I use mine to utilize any extras left on one (or two in the case of a 3 ply yarn) by taking the leftovers on my one bobbin and turning them into two so I can splice them into my plied yarn. There's a notch at the bottom to hold the singles for starting.
