This is a wonderful large serving bowl.....10 inches in diameter and 5" tall and weighing 1 lb. 10 oz. and was turned on our lathe.  This bowl was lovingly made from a Big Leaf Maple tree that was cut down near our property. Bring a rustic piece of nature and the forests of the PNW into your home! This big leaf maple bowl is handmade by my husband in his woodshop or sitting outside in our forest carving, sanding, cleaning and finishing.  
 
The bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum), also known as the Oregon maple, is a deciduous, long-lived tree native to the Pacific Northwest. True to its name, it has unusually large, 5-lobed, palmate (palm-shaped) leaves from its branches. These huge leaves can measure up to 12 inches wide and almost as long, a singular feature that distinguishes the bigleaf maple from others in this family. The bigleaf maple is the tallest maple in North America, reaching over 100 ft. in some areas. Big Leaf Maple wood is very instrumental in the NW, and can be used for wood-carving and many other things such as construction, cradleboards, bowls, and other household objects. Sapwood color ranges from nearly white, to an off-white cream color, sometimes with a reddish or golden hue. The heartwood tends to be a darker reddish brown.
 
All of our wood pieces are hand carved or hand turned and may be perfectly “imperfect” which is exactly what we love about them. Every piece is unique and no two will ever be alike. Different woods make them look even more unique. The bowl has a food safe finish.
 
Hand wash and dry your wooden kitchen tools. They should never be soaked in water. Oil when the wood seems dry with your favorite kitchen oil. You can rub with a slice of lemon if any strong flavors remain.
